Access to high school athletics in Pennsylvania varies substantially by district. For many students, particularly those in large, urban districts, opportunities to participate in school-based sports remain limited or out of reach. This has meaningful implications as sports participation is linked to positive academic, social, emotional, and health outcomes. As a result, the well-documented benefits of athletic participation are not equitably distributed across the state.
Drawing on newly analyzed statewide data from the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Interscholastic Athletic Opportunities Disclosure Form, this brief provides a comprehensive examination of access to and investment in high school athletics across Pennsylvania. Although these data files have been publicly available for more than a decade, they have rarely been used to systematically assess patterns of opportunity, participation, and resource allocation and inform efforts to improve access to school sports across the state.
