Research for Action has served as the evaluator for the Philadelphia GEAR UP program since its inception in 1999. This report provides an in-depth look at the GEAR UP goals as experienced by the first cohort of GEAR UP students to graduate from high school, some of whom became involved in the program in seventh grade. Drawn from survey and focus group data conducted with high school seniors in the spring 2005, findings from this report provide insight on students’ college aspirations and plans, perceptions of adult support, perceived strengths and anticipated challenges, and involvement with GEAR UP and other college readiness programs.
