Saxon Nelson serves as RFA’s Director of Community Engagement where he provides leadership, strategic planning, and visioning for RFA to expand community engagement with education research. Before joining RFA Saxon was a Contractor for Special Projects for the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), Office of Post-secondary and Higher Education focusing on efforts being made by the department that focus on equity and access. These projects focused on diversifying the educator workforce, highlighting, and convening counselors and managing PDE grants and scholarships. Immediately prior to joining PDE, Saxon was a Technical Assistance and Capacity Coordinator for the Mayor’s Office of Education focused on the implementation of Community Schools. While with the Mayor’s Office of Education he assisted with the implementation of Community Schools and focused on working with providers to partner with the initiative and individual schools. Saxon previously worked for the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey (UWGPSNJ) for 5 years. While he was with UWGPSNJ he managed the quality improvement system for out of school time programs, focused on developing local/regional/national early warning response system and assisting in the creation and management of other educational initiatives impacting populations in middle school to post-secondary. Saxon received his bachelor’s degree at Chestnut Hill College and is a Philadelphia native. He is currently board president of Youth United for Change and on the Board of Greensgrow.
