Cecily Mitchell is especially interested in school interventions to
improve the educational experiences and outcomes for students who have
been marginalized within the educational system. She graduated from
Wesleyan University with a B.A. in Psychology. While an undergraduate,
Mitchell wrote a senior thesis entitled, Disciplining Discourse: How the
Hidden Curriculum is Mediated by Race, Class, and Gender. Her thesis was
based on a participatory research project that examined how student
academic engagement is mediated by school rules and norms together with race and
gender in a 2nd grade classroom. An article based on this research is
forthcoming in the Journal of Community and Applied Social Psychology.
Prior to coming to RFA, she worked in a school-based behavioral health
program in a Philadelphia public elementary school, working
collaboratively with parents, students and teachers in the development of
effective classroom interventions for students with emotional/behavioral
disabilities. While at RFA, she has remained committed to the educational
welfare of children and youth, working on various evaluation and policy
studies. To this end, her work with RFA is an invaluable asset.
