Sara Getz became interested in questions of education policy, practice, and change while studying social movements in Mexico. Understanding the symbiotic relationship education had to the social movements and vice-versa in Mexico, she wanted to explore how education intersected with various systems within the United States. Of particular interest is the role of community and grassroots organizations in education reform. In addition, she is interested in educational access and equity, specifically among immigrant students and English Language Learners, the intersection of race, class, and gender in affecting students’ education experiences, and the implementation and effectiveness of alternative education programs. While completing her undergraduate work, she was a volunteer English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher to Latino senior citizens through Project SHINE where she was also a Program Assistant.
